Sense and Senseibilty
The novel Sense and Sensibility is about love and family and above all about being sensible when making decisions. The story revolves around two sisters and the choices they make concerning their love lives and each other. The story starts with the death of an old gentleman whose money is dispersed to various members of his family. One of the main recipients was Mr. John Dashwood, who had the duty of providing for his mother-in-law and sisters. His wife is greedy, epically for the well-being of their son and convinces her husband to give as little as possible. When the gentleman died, and I think he was Mr. John Dashwoods’s brother, he left the house to Mr. Dashwood, and as soon as she could his wife moved in. His wife was cold to Mr. Dashwood’s mother-in-law and sisters and although they had lived there before her, she reduced their status to mere visitors. This shows a major flaw in her character, because one she does not even want to provide anymore than is absolutely necessary for the well being of Mr.
After they move to their new home they meet many new people, Marianne for example falls in love with a man named Willoughby after twisting her ankle. Marianne’s new love for Willoughby is an example of her not being sensible, because her romance is exactly like a fairy tale romance. For example, she twists her an ankle in the rain, he carries her to her house, he is a big muscular good-looking guy, and they are all over each other everywhere they go, and there is jealousy, which is a necessary element. This is a fairy tale romance, but it is not realistic, no one stays with some one that carried him or her out of the rain. That is the type of beginning that is read in books and watched on movies, it is not the beginning that keeps to people together. So ultimately Marianne and Willoughby break up and because he never truly loved her he goes and finds another women who has a large fortune, because he squandered all of his money. The only true match for Marianne was her admirer from the beginning, Colonel Brandon.
