James Douglass Morrison

James Douglas Morrison was born in Florida, on December 8, 1943. He is best known as the lead singer of the 60’s rock band, The Doors. Jim is also a poet, writer, and filmmaker. During his career with The Doors, he and the other band members recorded seven albums. (Nite, 1990) During that time he made a name for himself. He became well known throughout North America and Europe. Aside from Jim’s career as a performer, writing was his life. He left his fans with over 1500 poems, stories, and lyrics. (Hopkins, 1995) He has also written books and produced movies. Although his life was very crazy, with many ups and downs, his fans will cherish Jim’s poetry and music for many decades to come.

Although Jim was a brilliant writer, he had one major downfall that essentially ended his life at 37 years old-drugs and alcohol. These drugs were readily available to him. Jim had a serious drinking problem. He was often drunk during his performances causing him to act foolish. Along with the drug abuse, he repeatedly defied authority figures.

It is known that his spiritual side began at an early age, probably around 4 years old. In many interviews with Jim he recalls a time when he and his family were driving in the dese

All of his poetry and songs moved people in many different ways. His ability to write helped him to express feelings that he couldn’t talk about. He was able to share that with others through his performances. Unfortunately, his love for alcohol quickly brought his career and life to an end.

Aside from Jim’s on stage performances, he captured his fans through his poetry and music. All of his writings were unique in some way. Many of them were very dark, depressing, and almost violent. When looking at the meaning of some of his poetry, it could be said that Jim was hurt and depressed on the inside. When people read his poetry or listen to his music, they get to see the thoughts and feelings of Jim at the time he wrote it. As Jim himself said of his poetry, "Real poetry doesn’t say anything, it just ticks off the possibilities, opens all doors. You can walk through any one that suits you… if my poetry aims to achieve anything, it’s to deliver people from the limited ways in which they see and fee.” (Hopkins, 1995) Jim did just that. That combined with his love of writing, produced poetry and music that his fans will always remember him by.

After a while, he decided to transfer to UCLA. His parents were against it for fear of the excessive amounts of drugs. He had made up his mind and went for it. He enjoyed UCLA and his classes. He majored in film. By this time in his life, Jim was already drinking heavily. He had even been in trouble with the law. At UCLA, Jim’s drinking habits took a slight increase. He also started smoking marijuana and taking LSD. His appearance changed from the drug use. He lost weight and changed his style of clothing. During this time, he kept writing. He was also interested in philosophy, especially Nietzche. (Densmore, 1990) He and four close friends would also have philosophy debates. They would also frequently use drugs. Jim allowed the drugs to take over a major part of his life, especially the alcohol.
