Many examples of the quest for knowledge leading to negative outcomes exists throughout history. Military weapons are an example, from the earliest in the history of warfare to today’s high-tech and devastating combat gear and vehicles. Some of today’s largest problems stem from war and terrorism that would be ineffective if it weren’t for all the war machines such as tanks, aircrafts, bombs and more seriously weapons of mass destruction. All these came about through scientific research, experimentation and work.

Albert Einstein one of the world’s greatest minds used his vast knowledge and work to split the atom, a respectable scientific goal and ground-breaking idea. However, his work lead to the production of the predecessors of today immensely powerful and threatening nuclear weapons. This alone resulted in huge standoffs and some of the world’s tensest moments during the Cold War and arms races.

Especially today, when technology is so advanced and seemingly limitless, it is more important than ever to be careful when creating new things or researching new subjects. Anyone could potentially be the next Victor Frankenstein or Albert Einstein. When there is a positive application for something it is easy for the creator and innovator of such a thing to forget that it has an equally if not more so dangerous side to it. Often it is overlooked or simply unknown until it is too late and the invention has already caused its destruction or harm.

Nevertheless, it is certainly true that the quest for wisdom and the human desire for advancement is a necessity. Without it almost everything we know today would not exist including; some of our engineering wonders such as the CN Tower, wonders of the ancient world like the Great Pyramids, not to mention electricity, computers, and modern vehicles.

It is the need to know and the pursuit of learning on both Victor’s and the monster’s behalf that is so trouble-causing. For Victor it leads to his tireless work and the effort that builds the presence of life and intelligence in such a disgusting form that all who see it are sickened
