Tin Star

High Noon While reading the short story “Tin Star” by John M. Cunningham and viewing the film High Noon directed by Fred Zinnemann, I was extremely surprised on how much I actually enjoyed the story and the film. My thoughts when I first heard the title of “Tin Star” were that it was going to be one of those old western movies that would be on television. To my surprise while viewing the film High Noon I was blown away. The film was not boring at all, and actually intrigued me. In my opinion the film was much more intresting than the text upon which it was based. The film included romance, action and suspense in one story. One key quality that I found particularly interesting was Will Kane courageous ways and honorable attitude. “ I hate to do this without the new sheriff here” In the very beginning of this film, sheriff Kane was getting married to a Quaker named Amy Fowler. Kane knew he had to give up his badge as s a sheriff so he could begin his life with her. Kane was so dedicated to his job that he wouldn’t just leave without knowing that a new sheriff was present to take his place. Kane was very particular about who he was going to pass his badge on to; taking his badge meant

that this person would have to have the same dedication for the job as he had. At one point in the film Kane’s friend came by the sheriffs office, Harvey explained to Kane that if he were to leave town and took care of the Miller situation that Harvey would be made the sheriff instead of hiring a new one. At this point Harvey tells Kane that he will help him only if Kane puts in a good word with the mayor. Kane responds that Harvey can help him with the Miller situation, but that he cannot put in a good word for Harvey with the mayor. Kane feels that Harvey is still a kid and does not yet have the qualities that are needed to hold a position such as sheriff. “That’s what I’m thinking there making me run I never” “Don’t go back!!” “I have to that’s the thing, I‘ve never run from a fight in my life!” In the film Kane goes against his instincts and attempts to ride away with Amy, leaving his town behind. Suddenly their carriage comes to a halt, and Kane explains to Amy that he has to go back. There’s no other way. She begs him to stay with her and not go back, but Kane has too great a loyalty to his town to let the Miller brothers come and destroy it. There is a place in the film where Harvey tries to fight Kane and knock him out in order to throw him on a horse. I felt Harvey was the person who wanted Kane gone the most, not because of the danger Kane faced from the Miller brothers but because he thought that Kane still had feeling
