is taken to refer to generally accepted standards of right and wrong in a society and the term ethics is taken to refer to more abstract principles which might appear in a code of professional ethics or in a textbook in ethical theory. However, the terms moral philosophy or moral theory would refer to a set of abstract moral principles as appropriately as the term ethics, so it may be more practical to use the words interchangeably. Both of the terms refer to standards of right conduct and the judgments of particular actions as right or wrong by those standards. In engineering ethics are a code of conduct in which to manner yourself and your work in the professional workplace, however that is not to say that morals are separate from the engineering field. Ethics and morals work in co-ordinance with one another to create the ultimate decision making minds of engineers. It is when the fact of which ethics and morals combine and outside factors that judge which morals and ethics come first in the professional world. When outside distractions and combinations of wrong ethics and morals affect an engineer or design professional, then that is the moment where that person has to stop and ask themselves a question, is this affecting my work? In which case another designer and or engineer must check the calculations and work of that affected engineer or designer. This is imperative in order to keep the mission statement of a professional engineer in tact, to protect for the health and safety of the general public. An engineers ethics, ethical decision making must be a solid foundation in order to prevent any catastrophic events from occurring in the engineering world.

A prime example of improper ethics and decision making of engineers or engineering firms in general was the project disaster of the Kansas City, Missouri Hyatt Regency Hotel Walkways Collapse. As the United States most devastating structural failure, in terms of loss of life and injuries, the Kansas City Hyatt Regency walkways collapse left 114 dead and in excess of 200 injured.
