Behavior Management Philosophy
I teach in a high school learning disabilities instructional classroom. This year, because of the needs of my students, I am doing mostly resource. My students are spending the majority of their day in regular education classrooms with a special education aide present. My students come into my classroom for a 55 minute class period each day. During that 55 minute period each student works on homework assigned in his/her classes and on the goals listed in his/her IEP. I have five rules posted in my classroom: 1.) Be in your seat when the bell rings, 2.) Have all needed homework, books, supplies, etc., 3.) Begin working independently on assigned tasks within 1 minute of the bell ringing, 4.) Cooperate and follow directions with adults and students, 5.) Work quietly and without disturbing others on your assigned tasks for 50 minutes. The rules in my classroom where decided on at a class meeting during the first week of school. Each of the students gave their input on what they thought needed to happen in order for us to have a productive resource hour. I had the final decision in the rules that we put together. I tried to correlate the rules with the IEP short term objectives that many of
my students have. The rules used in my classroom are in accordance with ISBE guidelines. There are also school wide rules that I follow in my classroom. If a student is tardy to my class three times he/she receives a lunch detention. If a student is using inappropriate or disrespectful language or is demonstration behavior that is potentially dangerous to the other students in the classroom, he/she is removed from the classroom and sent to the office. If this becomes a persistent problem a team consisting of that student’s teachers meet to come up with a behavior management plan to be used in every one of that student’s classes. In my classroom I use many non restrictive behavior interventions. I contact each of my student’s parents by phone at least once a month, more often if needed. I also collect progress reports every two weeks from each of my student’s teachers. These reports indicate the current grade, behavioral concerns, and missing assignments. I use this information to keep my students on track in their classes and to keep parents informed of their child’s progress. I mail these teacher progress reports home twice a month. I teach my students self-reinforcement skills and self-evaluation skills through daily use of the goal folders. I place students in various places around my classroom to reduce distractions or remove them from tempting situations. I use proximity control to keep inappropriate behavior at bay. There are times that I need to make individual contracts with an individual student to increase positive behavior. My students receive a grade for resource study hall. To determine this grade I have set up a rubric that
