Richard Price
New beginnings have provided their contemporaries with a multitude of possibilities for the future. They serve to renew, refresh and revitalise an occasionally listless view on society in order to move forward from its inceptors past, and break from convention for the good of man. Richard Price’s A Discourse on the Love of Our Country exemplifies this in several ways, ranging from specific language techniques through to the religious standpoint that Price’s discourse is delivered from. The French Revolution, had set the scene for Price’s writings, and it is in this time that his views had been so profoundly centered on the concept of new beginnings and the need for reform. The rhythm of the Discourse escalates as the piece progresses. Upon introducing his ideas Price uses a noticeably longer sentence structure with more clauses, conjunctions and larger more elaborate terms. The marginal sideline thoughts within the Ellipses develop into shorter and more concise sentences containing authoritative language and imperative thoughts indicated by the multitude of exclamation marks that riddle the closing paragraphs. The treatment of new beginnings follows on with this scheme, as they are first intricate and detailed until reasoning and time truly depict their worth and significance. New beginnings are treated with the utmost gratitude from Price. It is apparent that the composer’s background as a Unitarian minister has influenced the presentation of the Discourse, and also how it was so widely received. As many of Prices ministry contemporaries and their faithful parishioners had “met to thank god” Price was no exception. The spiritual imagery and continual references to god and our need to be thankful for his actions assist the Discourse in its argument. The use of a bible quotation adds further validity to the Discourse through a proclamation of the composer’s own thankfulness:
