The Albanian Virgin
In the story “The Albanian Virgin” there are two separate stories being told, by two completely different people. One of those stories is that of Claire. It takes place on the Pacific coast of Canada in the 1960's. The other of the two stories being shared is that of Charlotte’s. Charlotte’s story takes place nearly forty years earlier on the Dalmatian coast of Albania. At first the story Munro writes is confusing and lost me. Then in the end it all came together to form a big picture. Munro has a unique way of writing, and also that of positioning the reader. She has sort of a strategy for it, and it shows with her fight for past verus present. I became lost throughout reading Munro’s story for the fact that she made these abrupt transitions from Charlotte’s story, quickly jumping to the middle of Claire’s, and vice versa. I have come to notice the abrupt transitions which once confused me actually is what formed the story. The point Munro was trying to prove was that she was placing you in two worlds. One of those worlds consisted of Claire, the book store owner, and C
quarters above”(Munro 557). Also, by switching stories quickly perhaps might of thrown the is evidence of romance which takes place in both of the two stories. Even though there is a forty how they began. This leaves the reader to decide on what the outcome of the story shall be.
