“Heresy—An Uncommittable Sin?”
Heresy in the Church is a problem the Clergy of any religion must face. Heresy in the Catholic Church used to be a subject no one wanted to touch, because of the consequences and repercussions one faced for turning to heresy, now – a – days, heresy, is just a word in the vocabulary often turned away from in the Catholic Church. This article is addressed to those of the Catholic Church and followers of the Catholic Religion, who are searching for a closer and clearer, understand of the Catholic faith, and its principles. To the writers of recent theological writings, for them to see what they concluded about the Church is not always right. The author’s thesis is that of, “Heresy as a serious sin seems no longer a concern to many Catholic theologians. In fact, a large number seem to believe that such a sin is psychologically impossible. Such an attitude directly contradicts the entire Christian tradition as witnessed by Sacred Scripture, the Father, and the Magisterium of the Church.” He raises the question “How are ‘sins against the virtue of faith’ psychologically possible? Under this heading we shall include the traditional categories of heresy, apostasy, and infidelity, but without being especially co
In the old times the Church would seek out those who have turned against them and excommunicate them from the rest of the followers. People understood if they decided “not to listen to the community”, they would be excluded from it, after being warned once. Father Harrison states, “Catholicism, on the contrary, has traditionally affirmed that, at least under certain circumstances, it is extremely wicked to hold certain views.” Thus the “wicked sinners” of the church were denounced, tortured, and killed because of their different religious beliefs. Harrison believes that in the present time, the Church’s grasp on the followers isn’t as tight as before. The Church has allowed the “darker side of the coin” to be revealed. A quote stated in Psalms 36:1-2 says, “Sin speaks to the sinner in the depths of his heart; He so flatters himself in his mind that he knows not his guilt.” Sin is “irrational” and according to Harrison, “part of the ‘mystery of iniquity’ that we rational being can so often sink to a level where we act in a way that goes completely against the grain of our God – given nature.” Here he is stating that we can think for ourselves but tend to lead on to the unbeaten path, we go in the direction where we shouldn’t venture, the dark, murky pathway compared to the “lighted” pathway, in sense, ‘God’s way’, the pure path to follow.
