Culture

Ever since we were children, many of us dreamed of seeing the world. Being able to travel and have many adventures. Unfortunately a lot of those dreams that we had as children don't get to be realized. The possibility of being able to travel sometimes isn't an option. There are many reasons why people aren't able to travel the world. Financial inconveniences, lack of time, work reasons, health problems or just the lack of inspiration. This however doesn't mean that we have to isolate ourselves from the rest of the world. Just because we can't always travel doesn't mean we can't learn about other cultures. I live in probably the most diverse place in the world, New York. My friends range from Latinos like myself to about every other ethnicity possible. There are many ways to learn about other people's culture. One of them is by just taking the time to listen. By asking questions to people from a different background than yours, you can get a lot of knowledge about other cultures. The Internet is another excellent way to learn about cultures since you can find virtually any information about any culture. Learning about other people's culture helps us understand people who are different from us better. We also get a sense of just how diverse our world really is. Learning about other cultures helps take the blindfold of ignorance from our eyes and helps us become more tolerant of people who may or are very different from us. .
About three years ago my mom met one very interesting girl. She was from Poland. My mom met Gemma in her workplace in Herald Square, Manhattan. She and Gemma seemed to "click" right away. They soon became very good friends and one day mom bought Gemma to our house for us to meet her. Although Gemma had only been in America for only a couple of years she knew how to speak English very well. When she told us that she had only lived in the USA for less than two years we hardly believed her.
