Red Baron
Manfred von Richthofen otherwise known as the red Baron was well known throughout all the soldiers in World War I. The Red Baron was born on May 2, 1892 in Breslau Germany. Manfred died on April 21, 1918. He was 25 years old. All of the Germans called him der Rote Kampfflieger. This means the red battle flyer (says vonrichthofen.com). The French called him Le Petit rouge. This meant the same as the English nickname for him, The Red Baron. “Manfred Von Richthofen was a pilot in the days where airplanes were made of wood and fabric,” says Briggsenterprises.com. What mainly got the Red in Red Baron was that he always flew a red airplane. One of Richthofen’s later airplanes was the Fokker Dr. I or otherwise known as the triple Decker. This plane was called a triple Decker because of its very unique and maneuverable design. The plane had three wings and a one hundred and ten horsepower motor; this was a lot back than for an airplane. One of the only ways to take down this new and sleek design was to attack it from above. In fact this maneuver is part of how Manfred himself got shot down says Ezra Bowen author of Knights of the Air. The Red Baron killed twenty-one of his eighty victims in this ma
In the year 1916 Manfred von Richthofen had a very historic year because in April 24th, Richthofen shot down his first plane as a pilot for Germany. Then on September 1st At Oswald Bouclé’s invitation, Richthofen reported for duty on the Western Front. He began his career with Jagdstaffel two in an Albatross D.II biplane. Although it was the Fokker Dr.I triplane with which Richthofen is remembered, he spent the majority of his time flying biplanes like the Albatross D.II and D.III. Then on November 23, Richthofen with a superior aircraft by his side made the British ace Major Lanoe Hawker his eleventh victim. Then in the year 1917 Manfred continued to make a name for himself as he (on January 4th) scored his sixteenth victory, turning him into the top living German ace. Then on January 12th von Richthofen received the Orden Pour le Merite. With that the Red Baron gained control of the Jasta elf (eleven). Richthofen then decided to paint his parts of his aircraft red to help his allies easily identify him in the air. The Red Baron was afraid that his allies would accidentally shoot at him. Manfred Chose red because red was the color of his old Uhlan cavalry. This is what began the tradition in which each plane in his squad displayed some color to show their unity to the red baron. Later on after this some British airplanes had painted their noses of their airplanes red. Showing that they were trying to hunt down the red baron. Later on in this year Richthofen ran into some difficulties as on January
