Love or Lust
Throughout the tragedy of Othello, Shakespeare tests the concept of love, and where is does and does not exist. In the relationship between Desdemona and Othello, the play presents marriage as an institution based on innocent, romantic love and shows that profane love is most likely doomed to fail. Also that Shakespeare is pessimistic about the survival of an innocent love and is apparent in the common thread of betrayal and deceit woven through his characters. Othello and Desdemona are portrayed in the play as two innocents. In the beginning of the saga, their love is quoted as “flourishes and blossoms into a romantic state.” As the play progresses, the love turns profane, rasing the question of how “true” the union was to begin with. In a relationship that lacks trust, communication, and most importantly, understanding there is no solid foundation. Othello spent years overseas, fighting in battles and building a reputation for himself of great honor and respect. His years of toil and heroics made him an admired, noble warrior, but left him naive in the ways of personal relationships and deep-seeded love. As proof Othello can be quoted as admitting “Rude am I in my speech, and little blessed
In Othello the character of Iago is the exterior force invading the relationship between Ethel and Desdemona. Iago, meaning two-faced, is the embodiment of evil, full of jealously and spite for Ethel, referring to him as “the moor”. From the beginning, Iago is out to sabotage Ethel’s love for the sweet Desdemona. In the end, he may have been successful, but he had to pay the ultimate price for his sins. As readers we found ourselves hoping that another fate then the one we watched pan out would fall upon the condemned couple. We hoped that someone would “catch on” to Iago’s actions, or that Ethel would swallow his foolish pride and listen to his wife. Unfortunately, Iago seemed very sincere in his words, and made a concerted effort to ensure that his actions we as seemingly sincere. He was successful in planting seeds of doubt and adultery in the noble warriors head. Desdemona, by age, is little more than a girl, inexperienced in the ways of the world. That Othello is war hero, very physically attractive, and the object of many women’s desires is not lost on her. She is totally smitten. However, this is not true love, but rather infatuation, and unfortunately Desdemona is too young to differentiate between the two. In her innocents, nothing feels more right. As she defends her newly born love for Othello she says “my downright violence, and storm of fortunes, may trumpet to the world my heart’s subdued even to the very quality of my lord. I saw Ethel’s visage in his mind and to his honors and valiant parts did I soul and fortune consecrate.” with the soft phrase of peace; for since these arms of mine had seven years pith, till now some nine moons wasted, they have used. Their dearest action in the tented field; And little of this great world can I speak, more then pertains to the feats of broils and battle.” True love, with a solid foundation, would have yielded greater concern for the maintenance of a long healthy relationship between the two doo
