Jimmy Hendrix

Johnny Allen Hendrix was born on November 27, 1942 in Seattle, Washington. His father changed his name to James Marshall Hendrix, but his fans know him as Jimi Hendrix. He is arguably the most influential electric guitarist in the history of rock. He remarkably played a right handed guitar, and he is left handed. While still in school he expanded his experience by joining a couple local rhythm and blues bands. After school he enlisted as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division. This is where he met Billy Cox. Billy Cox was a bass player, but also Jimi’s partner in a group they called the King Kasuals. Their group was originally an attraction only for the troops, but renewed when both men were civilians.

Hendrix broke his ankle in 1962 which caused him to be discharged. After becoming a civilian he worked with many touring revues, backing groups like the Impressions, and backing people like Sam Cooke. He spent more time with artists like the Isley Brothers and Little Richard.


“Little Wing”, was a delicate love song that offered insight into Hendrix’s offstage persona.

He was able to record with them, but not able to adopt the type of performance those artists required. The experience he gained from working with various artists who were at the top of the music business was essential for his claim to fame. In 1965 he signed a pitiful contract with manager, Ed Chaplin, who was also the manager for soul singer Curtis Knight who Hendrix had just joined together with. This was a bad decision Jimi made that would come back to haunt him. In June of 1966, Hendrix formed a group called the Rainflowers, and then he formed Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. After they performed at Greenwich Village, Chas Chandler the bass player for the Animals’, heard Jimmy and persuaded him to go to London where he would have a real appreciative audience.
