Charles J. Wales lived a reckless and wild life prior to the crash of 1929. He lost more than money during the crash; he lost his wife to a grave in Vermont, and his daughter to his sister in-law, Marion. However, Charlie has succeeded in turning his life around. In spite of this fact he still does not have custody of his daughter, Honoria; Marion does. Marion is unable to forget the past, and move forward. She denies Charlie and Honoria the chance they both desire, and deserve to be a family.

Charlie lived his life prior to the stock market

Marion is a woman who clearly dislikes Charlie. In the story, the reader can see that even prior to the death of her sister, Marion did not like Charlie or his lifestyle. Marion resented and continues to resent Charlie and her sister for partying and throwing money around at a time when her and her husband, Lincoln struggled to get by. She is skeptical about Charlie’s visit, but seems to recognize his agenda is to regain custody of Honoria.

Honoria, however, certainly tells he father of her desire to come and live with him. She does not understand why she can not live with him. Charlie deeply desires a life with Honoria to instill in her some of himself. He longs to be apart of her life and provide her with not only himself , but things Marion and Lincoln economically can not.

Marion and Lincoln have provided Honoria with the best life possible. They have two children of their own and have found a way to make it even during the hard times. Her dislike for Charlie is clearly outlined throughout the story. The memories from the past flood Marion during Charlie’s visit causing her to become ill. Charlie is able to see that Marion and Lincoln have done a good job raising Honoria; in his absence, and through his wife’s death.

Marion and Lincoln are currently giving Honoria everything that she needs. She is successful in school and is in a household where she is loved. The reader can not decide if Marion truly wants to keep Honoria from Charles due to the fact that he will not be a good parent, or is it because of her own prejudices towards the man. They have Honoria’s best interest at heart; however, a child should be allowed to know her natural father. Marion has the right idea of waiting a year to totally give up custody, maybe she should wait even lo
