Creativity in education

We as a society are destroying our children’s right to a quality education. By introducing the standardize test we have only accomplish one goal; teaching our children how to take a test. It does not matter if they know the right answer it is multiple choice they have a one in four chance of getting it right. Standardize testing forces teachers to educate children one way. Children need creativity to learn. Andreadis talks about how science has taken this same approach. She states,

When I signed up to be a scientist, I assumed that the work would be the equivalent of an architect building new structures. Instead, I discovered that I was expected to be a bricklayer-a data collector.

Here she is stating how science has lost the motivation to think outside the box; that any unorthodox thinking is looked down upon by others in the science community.

Our schools are heading in the same direction with the standardize test. Because children learn in different ways, we must introduce different styles of learning techniques into our schools. One way to do this is to encourage more creativity in education.

With California near bankruptcy, education is the first to suffer th

It is like Andreadis says, “What makes great science is the willingness and ability to go outside narrow frameworks.” What makes great education is the ability set aside the traditional setting and expand into that creative realm so that our children can achieve a better education.

A well known figure on education named John Dewey believed that individuals learn through different techniques and social experiences. He states, “We must design instruction so that each individual learner can effectively build on what they know, and have the resources and assistance to learn.” What he means by this is that people use different styles to learn. If we abandon creativity and cut classes that produce creativity in children; we are not giving our children a fair chance to succeed in our society.

What would have happened if Christopher Columbus or Leaf Erickson would have followed the philosophy of old? If they kept to tradition; other explorers would have set out to discover new worlds. What about our future Columbus’s and Erickson’s; without diversity we are limiting their creativity process. Instead of just reading about them in history, why not introduce our children to more imaginative ideals to learn about the age of exploration. By doing this we not only educate them on the age of exploration, but encourage them to use their mind in a creative atmosphere.
