The unforeseen plots and twists in this novel kept reader’s interest and reading word for word. “After a brief pause, the physician turned away. The various types of characters in The Scarlet Letter help create a dim feeling to readers. “’Hast thou enticed me into a bond that will prove the ruin of my soul?’” (72) Hester was asking Chillingworth if he was the devil. Hester’s doubt about her promise to Chillingworth in not to reveal the name of her husband led Hester to ask such a question. “In Mr. Dimmesdale’s secret closet, under lock and key, there was a bloody scourge.” (133) Dimmesdale’s sin was getting the best of his conscience. In order to cope with his guilt he would whip himself as punishment. “Pearl took some eel-grass, and imitated, as best as she could, on her own bosom, the decoration with which she was so familiar on her mother’s.” (163) Hester’s daughter Pearl wanted to imitate her mother; she was terrified by it. Pearl was unaware of the significance of the scarlet letter to the Puritans; she tried to get information from her mother to uncover what it meant. The unique personalities of the characters in The Scarlet Letter allowed the readers to get a first hand perspective of the story.
