What is pop art

What exactly is Pop Art? An over-used question which has a simple answer; a form of art that depicts objects or scenes from everyday life and employs techniques of commercial art and popular illustration. It was based on everyday life and the popular culture around everyone, for instance, magazines, comics, celebrities and objects.

Although pop art did start to emerge in the 1950’s in England, the time it really hit everyone was in the 60’s, in New York. The art was new and unique, which stopped the fine line between ‘high art’ and ‘low art’, and brought a new meaning to the word ‘art’. It was witty, clever and humorous, and no doubt it stirred up a media and artist frenzy.

Still, the argument goes on as to whether the most amazing innovation of the 20th century is pop art, or cubism. Obviously, possibly the most famous pop artists of all time is Andy Warhol (1928-1987), he is a household name all over the world. Many of his p

This quote is from my favourite pop/graffiti artist; John “Crash” Matos. He was born in 1661 in New York. His work wasn’t discovered in the most conventional way; he sprayed murals on the walls of buildings, subway cars and basketball courts. By the middle of 1989 he had been featured in many galleries and museums, not just in the United States, but also around the world.

Modern urban graffiti apparently originated in 1971 in New York when a young man started writing TAKI 183 on walls around the city, it seemed to signify nothing apart from a name, which is known as a ‘tag’ or tagging’. This became noticed and more and more people started to ‘tag’, and realising the advantages of spray paint over felt pens (there were limited surfaces for felt pens to be used on), and soon not only were people ‘tagging’ but they were creating pieces (masterpieces, for example pictures, symbols and messages).
