“Wanna get high?”, “Let’s toke it up”, “Lemme hit that”, “Ima poke some smot”, these sayings have been heard everywhere in America. Far and wide are the reaches of what these people are talking about: smoking marijuana. For decades here in America we have been lied to. We have been told untruths from a government with irrational fears about something they know little about. We have been told marijuana is a killer drug and how it will lead to harder drugs and a life in the gutter or a dumpster somewhere. What we have been told couldn’t be further from the truth. There are many medicinal uses for the marijuana plant as well as benefits for our country and economy. Our country’s laws are unjust and hypocritical. It’s time we all realize the truth behind marijuana and have these scales fall from our eyes. “Marijuana” is the Mexican colloquial name for a plant known to botanists as Cannabis Sativa. In various forms, it has been familiar throughout the world: in Africa as “dagga,” in China as”ma,” in northern Europe as “hemp,”’ in India as “bhang,”, “ganja,” and “charas.” Here in the United States there are many names for Marijuana that we use including but not limited to: Mary J
The conclusions of the National Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse are as valid today as they were thirty years ago. The decriminalization of marijuana should be the first step toward a rational drug policy. The benefits would be felt immediately. Law enforcement resources would be diverted from marijuana smokers to more serious crimes like rape and murder. Thousands of jail cells would become available to house violent criminals. Decriminalizing marijuana would also help to resolve the current dispute over its medicinal use. Seriously ill patients would no longer risk criminal prosecution for obtaining their medicine. Marijuana is less toxic than most common foods. Denying cancer patients, AIDS patients, and paraplegic’s access to a useful medication that’s safer than most legally prescribed drugs is vindictive and inhumane! (Schlosser 43) Our declaration of independence states : “That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.” So if the people decide the United States should be communist then the people have a right to do anything they can do make this country communist and it is there right to do so. However during the McCarthy era the defining political question was: “Are you now, or have you eve been, a member of the Communist party?” That is so sad, but true. Now our unconstitutional question for every member of Congress and candidate for elected office has to answer is the question: “Are you now, or have you ever been a pot smoker?” (Schlosser 49) Decriminalize marijuana if not for you, then for the good of our country. U.S. would reap the benefits of legalizing marijuana or even decriminalizing it. California saves 100 million dollars every year due to their leniency of marijuana smokers. The United States as a whole would save 2 billion dollars every year if marijuana was legal. On top of the money saved marijuana is something the government can grow, and tax the hell out of! Marijuana is the United States biggest underground cash crop, and it is estimated that if it were legal it would be our biggest cash crop.
