The Late, Great, Me

I enjoyed The Late, Great, Me because it was about real life teen problems. Even though I myself do not suffer an alcohol problem, I am sure many teens could. This book gives a wonderful insight on a typical teen’s struggle and life with alcohol. Geri Peters struggles with the problems that all teenagers deal with. She wants to feel good about herself in school, in her family, and with her friends. However, she makes some poor choices. The book shows how Geri takes control of the disastrous effects of alcohol in her life.

Geri begins drinking to solve her problems; however, her drinking causes problems. To begin, Geri begins to drift away from her two best friends, Carolyn and BJ. In the beginning of the story, Geri describes herself as being a “freak”, or an outcast. She has two best friends, Carolyn and BJ. After Geri meets her boyfriend, Dave, Geri begins slipping away from her best friends and slipping more and more into alcohol. Geri attempts to get her friends involved in her latest hobby, but after trying it, they knew that alcohol was not the right thing for them. They decide to let Geri go. Another example of a problem would be her school life. When Geri begins her alcoholic ways,

she had just began her junior year of high school and was doing fairly well. Over the months, Geri began setting alcohol as her main priority. She began slacking in school, failing classes, and started becoming violent with teachers. Her alcoholism became so bad that she even began putting a mixture of scotch and milk in her locker. When her teacher, Ms. Laine, tries to confront her, Geri simply denies that she has an alcohol problem. Moreover, a problem shows up after Geri decides to bring a beagle home from the beach. After an outing to a local pub, instead of going home, Geri demands that Dave takes her somewhere rather than home. Dave decides to take her to the beach where they have a few more drinks. Geri notices a dog outside of the truck and is set on taking it home. When Dave takes Geri home, she quietly sneaks her new pet up to her room. She is greeted by her cat, Lola, when suddenly the dog begins barking and chasing the cat. To stop the madness, Geri opens the front door and lets them both out. In the morning, Geri wakes up to the news that Lola had been killed by a car.

The book shows how Geri takes control of the disastrous effects of alcohol in her life. Geri begins drinking to solve her problems; however, her drinking causes problems, although Geri’s alcoholism is her responsibility, her family situation has contributed to her disease, and in spite of her problems with alcohol, Geri begins to take control of her life.

In spite of her problem with alcohol, Geri begins to take control of her life. To begin, Geri begins to attend AA m
