Jackie Wilson
Mr. Excitement is what they called him. Jackie Wilson was an R & B artist who reached his peak during the late 50’s and early 60’s. He was an outstanding performer with an euphorious voice that left audience wanting more of Jackie’s performances. He was an all around great entertainer. Jackie Wilson’s combination of good looks (See Appendice A), wily dance moves, and melodious voice helped him achieve this. Even Eddie Pride of the famed group Eddie Pride and the Midnighters admitted“I used to call myself a singer, but after listening to Jackie I gave up.” (Douglas 26)Jackie held the potential to be one of the most promising artist of his time. Unfortunately, numerous music industry giants who would take advantage of incipient artist and use their unscrupulous mechanics to rob artist of their money intercepted Jackie’s rise to the top. Perhaps the most successful and notable of these industry giants was Nat Tarnopol. Nat “the rat” Tarnopol had been linked to robbing Wilson of a plethora of royalty checks and medical benefits. Supposedly, Nat’s crooked and greedy tactics resulted in Jackie dying penniless, leaving his family to pay the outstanding medical bills. Nat Tarnopol was a criminal who stole fr
Brunswick quickly became drowned in scandal. In 1976, Tarnapol (along with several other execs) was convicted of fraud and conspiracy as a result of monies that has allegedly came up missing from the accounts of Brunswick artists, which sparked an interest in Wilson’s attorney. Wilson’s attorney, Mr. Adourian, knew that Brunswick convictions would mean that the scandal more than likely was connected to his client’s (Wilson) financial woes, who was in a comatose state due to a collapse during a performance six months earlier. Adourian began to investigate thoroughly and faithfully. After Tarnopol and three other executives were convicted on 22 counts of mail fraud and 1 count of conspiracy, Adourian requested to see record company books. The Brunswick label did not allow Adourian to see the books nor did they allow any one to view them. After the refusal, he filed suit in Camden Federal Court asking the judge to allow him full access to Wilson’s financial records at Brunswick. Adourian charged breach of contract and made the claim that Brunswick failed to pay and account for one million dollars that were due to Wilson. Adourian later found out that Wilson was entitled to health insurance also. At this particular point during the investigation, Wilson was thousands of dollars in debt with the hospital and penniless while in a coma, so this was good news for Adourian. He discovered that Nat never told Wilson that he was entitled to health coverage on the Blue Cross/ Blue Shield insurance company through his union pensions and welfare plan from the beginning at Brunswick. Under section 34 of the AFTRA, pension and welfare clause, an artist is eligible for Blue Cross/ Blue Shield if he earns more than one thousand dollars
