Bigger Thomas and Richard Wright: Similar, Yet Different In the movie Native Son Bigger Thomas is tough, yet shuts his feelings and expressions around white people. In the book Black Boy Richard Wright shows hate against the white people more openly, and doesn't show any signs of fear while speaking to a white person. Though Thomas Bigger is very different from Richard Wright in many ways, they are also similar. In the movie Native Son Thomas Bigger speaks of talking back and fight for his rights against white people, but Bigger keeps all his thoughts and actions to himself while around white people. When he is confronted by any white person he lowers his voice, looks at the ground, and answers everything with a short and quick “yes sir.” When Bigger was asked to join his bos
ses's daughter and her boyfriend for dinner he refused, staring at the floor and speaking in a lower voice than theirs, he kindly rejected their offer. Later in the movie when Bigger was at the table with both the girl and her boyfriend he was approached by his girlfriend, feeling ashamed of her and refusing to imply he knows her, he does not speak or answer her. Thomas Bigger might have lived in a different place and a different time, he might have done many things different from Richard Wright, but they are very similar.
