Shakespeare
Hamlet was very well written novel and I found that both films resembled the play but in different ways. The Adaptation from the films to the book is distinguished very differently throughout each character, each setting and each plot. One draws its inspiration to the book because of its relationship by the following of the plot. The second version of Hamlet by Mel Gibson has similarities towards the time period, especially with the close relationships of the settings. I also found Mel Gibson’s version to express the character of Hamlet more accurately. Even though both are realistically similar to the book, I found Mel Gibson’s version had many more similarities when it came to having the right kinds of settings, and I found the characters to fit the actual actors better. In the novel of Hamlet I found his character to be very dramatic but in a calmer state of mind, in most cases. In the Branagh version I found Hamlet to be quite loud and unappealing. He never spoke like I pictured it in the novel; he was always talking as loud as he could. He also seemed so much more hyper; he was always swinging his arms as he spoke and jumping around while he walked. The Mel Gibson’s version showed
the character of Hamlet to be more of what I expected. He was calmer and his dialogue seemed more natural. Like in the scene with Ophelia when everyone was trying to find out what was causing Hamlet to act so crazy. The Mel Gibson version, even though not word for word like Branagh seemed to show Hamlet’s true actions. I believe Hamlet loved Ophelia and that even though he had to act crazy, he would never truly hurt her. In the Mel Gibson version, Hamlet acted a little more rational towards her but in the Branagh version he dragged her around viciously in the mirrored room. If you truly love someone you are not going to go to extents like that, even to prove a point. What I also I found interesting was the differences in clothing. The clothes in Branagh seemed to be quite nice, all the time. Even the way they were designed seemed to be pretty classy for the time period. One thing that really caught my eye in that version was how Hamlet wore black everyday until the day Ophelia drowned, and then he added a little more colour to his wardrobe. In the Gibson version it didn’t really matter cause he wasn’t in black all the time either. Throughout the character of Hamlet I find Mel Gibson to play his character the best. The setting of the novel in my imagination was nothing of what either movie was like. I never pictured the castle to be so glamorous as in the Branagh version. It looks like a castle we would have today in the new millennium, not back then. The Gibson version had a lot of stone. I pictured the castle to be stone but not all around the outside as well. The way that the grounds were laid out around the castle seemed a lot more life like compared to Branaghs’. The ot
