Rain of gold and myers briggs test

Rain of Gold is a beautiful Mexican-American story told by Victor Villasenor. In the book, Villasenor described the lives of his father and mother in Mexico and later in America. He told us how his family was forced as well as other families to abandon their beloved country because of Mexican Revolution. He also explained how hard his family had to got through hunger, prejudice, and unfair work in the United States. As I read the book, I saw Juan Salvador Villasenor, one of the main character of story, was extremely strong character. I wondered it is useful to apply some concept from the Myers-Briggs Temperament Test, a testing instrument which I had become familiar at the beginning of the class, to analyze literary character like Juan. The Myers-Briggs Temperament Test developed by a mother/daughter team of psychologist in the 1950’s as a way to better understanding the differences of temperament in people. I found out that we not only can understand people who took the test but also we can apply the test framework to understand character from fiction. According to the personality types by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, Juan was identified as letter E( Extroversion) and letter F( Feeling).

Seeing Juan paying attention to outside world, I also saw him more active. Growing up in the mountainous region, Juan was strong. The author said, “ He was strong; he’d been raised in the mountains at nearly six thousand feet and, ever since he could remember, he’d been running from sun to sun with his brother Domingo and their giants cousins, Basilio and Mateo, chasing the wolves and coyotes away from their herds of goats”(p.121).However, his physical trait was best described as he was running to catch the train. Villasenor wrote, “ He went all nigh- walking and running- until he came out the other side of the small red rock hills and the morning stars were his companions”(p.125).

Besides extroversion, Juan also fit with letter F( Feeling). He liked to decide things by considering what was important to him or his family. His family was very important to him. After coming to America, Juan had been working at Cooper Queen Mining Company. Because his brother in laws lost their paychecks to gamble, Juan worked hard to support his family. The author explained, “Juan was not able to support his family by working only one shift at the Copper Queen, so he decided to change his name to Juan Cruz and get a second job on the night shifts”(p.213). Then he was imprisioned at age of 12 for stealing $6 worth of ore from the mine he worked. He accepted the offer to commit the murder of Texas Ranger. “He went
