Genie Reaction Paper

On November 4, 1970, a young girl was found. This little girl was isolated for just about ten years, in a single room, most of the time tied to a potty chair. The little girl appeared to be about eight years old, but was found to be thirteen. .
Many doctors and scientists perked up with interest in working with the little girl, called Genie. Those working with her wanted to know if a young child isolated for so long, with the mental capacity of an 18 month old, could learn language and become closer to normal. When Genie was found, she was barely able to walk and talk. Genie was taken to a children's hospital. She rarely made noises, which showed signs of being abused for making noises. Various people worked with Genie testing her and trying to get her learn. Doctors and many other people wanted to know if Genie was retarded from birth. As the years went on, Genie was taught more and more. She was able to learn words and could relate things. Although Genie was never able to learn enough to be normal, she made huge improvements. .
The video talked about what makes us human. It was questioned if it is appearance, or walking up right, or language. Arrangatanges walk up right and the boy Victor that was found, was human but had no language. When Victor was found, Persians saw human nature stripped from society and culture and the reaction it had. No one created the reaction, and that was known as the forbidden experiment. The video also argued how humans acquire language. It is believe we are born with principles of language and because of nature it is in us. Doctors in the video believe there is a deadline for learning language. I believe that a person no matter what mental capacity can learn something new. Some may be able to learn language, but others may not. .
Finally, I don't have an opinion on whether testing Genie was ethical or unethical. I believe that most of the doctors that worked with her, wanted to help her and see if she could be taught.
