Deafening Silence

As I started this book I was drawn into every bit of it and I did not want to put it down. The authors did an excellent job on writing this story. Though Thomas Spradley was merely a father trying to provide for his family as a mathematics teacher, James P. Spradley was a writer who wrote many books, and being Lynn’s uncle I think that they wrote this book to let people know how it was raising a daughter who was deaf. The authors gave a great perspective on how everyone dealt with this and affected by this form of a so-called disability. Some people treat it as a disability but to me it is not. Deafness is not a disability but a challenge given to people who merely accept it and go on with life. I believe that both these authors wrote this story to help the world understand the hearing impaired, which hopefully also gave an insight on how difficult it was raising a daughter who was deaf. This story gave a good example from the parent’s point of view.

I believe that the authors put forth more than just an effort on this book; they also put their hearts, souls, and examples of living into writing this story. This story, written with great emotions showed the struggles Louise and Tom went through to raise Lynn. They also gave great insight on how people felt and dealt with situations in their own way. This book was worth all the effort of reading it and seeing their point of view of how the Spradley family lived. The authors gave people a better understanding about the deaf community. I believe that the major strengths to this book were that they had their daughter, who was deaf, and received a first hand experience. They could relate to how families experiencing the same problems and wrote about it. Thomas and James made a great choice and set a good example by writing this story, though a weakness that I could see is that I wanted to know what happened to the family and felt maybe they should have written a bit more about her because it was interesting and I wanted to keep reading about Lynn. Anyone who reads this book will have a greater aspect on the deaf community. This story will have lasting value to me because I realized how everyone not just her family was affected in some way. In addition, it will also have lasting value t
