Agenda Setting in relation to media control

In this paper I am going to examine the main assumptions surrounding the Agenda Setting Theory. I will be identifying the theory as well as discussing many questions surrounding the theory and relating it to my final paper which will be examining Media Control in East Asia.

Research on the Agenda Setting Theory was initiated by Maxwell McCombs and Donald Shaw, theorists from the University of Texas, Austin and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. They chose to focus on the medias ability to filter information before it reaches the public in order to influence the publics’ opinion. The idea of agenda setting reflects how powerful the media can be in molding peoples agenda. The media is not asking us what to think, but what to think about. Agenda setting is very popular with influential people as it is a predictive power, if people are receptive to the same media they will feel the same issues are important.

There are two levels of Agenda Setting, the first being that there is a focus on general issues that are considered more important and the second, highlighting parts of that subject are the most important to focus on. This then can potentially influence the way the public would view an issue and persuade us to

Who is affected by agenda setting? Most would like to believe that our society is aware that agenda setting take place and therefore take the time to think about the information they are given. Unfortunately I believe we live in a very influential world where people put way too much trust in what the media tells them. We, as a society, have become lax and choose to not always look deeper into something than we should/. Those that undertake this are receptive to the media agenda. They have a need for guidance and are usually quite uncertain about issues and let what they see influence them.

think a certain way about it, this is what is called framing. This process is inevitable, there will always be powerful agents focusing and shaping certain issues for their personal gain. This is something that McCombs discusses and shouldn’t be a foreign concept to our society as it happens all the time.

My final paper will be focusing on media control in East Asia, it will also show how agenda setting is a popular method of government control. One of the major problems with the media in East Asia is that it is predominantly run by the governing state. Their power over the distribution of media has restricted international agencies from entering many Asian countries and has also maintained propaganda media within their countries. Agenda setting can be a useful and positive tool for society because it puts information out to the field, yet a considerable amount of that tends to be biased. Eastern Asian countries have taken advantage of the agenda setting theory, and manipulated popular opinion by limit
