Wild strawberries
Ingmar Bergman’s film Wild Strawberries is reflected in the book written by Erik H. Erikson, his wife Joan M. Erikson and Helen Q. Kivnick. The film is reflected upon in the third section of Vital Involvements in Old Age. The main character of the film, as well as that being explained in the book, is that of Isak Borg. Isak, was born into a family as one of ten children however; he is the only one still alive today. That seems to me that he was very strong in his childhood, at least health wise and intellectually. At the very beginning of the movie, it starts with Isak Borg introducing himself stating that he has been a doctor for fifty years (bacteriologist as said in the book). He has stated that he has pretty much withdrawn from the social bout of life. He expresses great loneliness in his older life than in the past. He had been married but his wife has been dead for many years. They had one child together a son named Evald who is now also a doctor who lives in Lund. His son however has no children at all. Isak is now surviving as he says with the help of his housekeeper of forty years Agda. I feel that the relationship between him and his housekeeper is also a cold one as was with his wife also.. I feel this
I feel that in the previous scene with the fight between Mr. And Mrs. Alman it made Isak see just how poorly his marriage actually was. The coldness that Mr. Alman showed to his wife was the same coldness that Isak showed to his wife. The third dream here is that of Mr. Alman taking Isak into the woods to where he was standing on that Tuesday afternoon when his wife betrayed him and had the affair with the man in the woods. What I found quite interesting about this is how after they were done with their business, she sat there and began to speculate of exactly how Isak would react if she decided upon telling him. She said how she would ask for his forgiveness and how he would in turn say to her that there was nothing in which to forgive. In the book the author’s describe a series of three dreams. The first, which occurs in the wild strawberry patch. Here Sara is sitting right next to Isak and she asks if he has ever looked at himself in a mirror before. Sara then beneath her basket takes a mirror out and holds it up to Isak forcing him to look at himself. She is basically insinuating to him how old he is in this particular age and how she is still young and has her whole life yet to live. I feel we see this in Marianne and Evald’s relationship also. Marianne has the will to live and to welcome children into the world. At the same time Evald holds just as much despair and stagnation within himself as his father. Sara says as stated in the book “she has been too considerate with him” At this point in the book and movie Sara says “look at yourself in the mirror, try to smile, doesn’t it hurt”. She then proceeds to inform Isak of her intentions on marrying Sigfrid.
