In 1775 the countries of France and England are very similar and it could be said that they are experiencing the “the best of times” or “the worst of times.” The countries have inept rulers, violence and injustice, and most people think it will continue like this forever.

On a November night a horsemen stops a mail coach in Dover and asks for a man named Jarvis Lorry. The messengers name is Jerry who is delivering a message from Tellson’s Bank in London. Lorry gives the response “Recalled to Life” and the coach drives away.

Once in Dover Lorry waits for someone in a motel. Lucie Manette shows up and wants to know what Tellson’s Bank wants from her. Lorry tells her that Alexandre Manette, her father, who she thought was dead, is now alive. Hs is being held in Paris, and Lorry agrees to take her and Miss Pross, her nurse, to see him.

The group finds her father in a wine shop in Paris. He is making shoes because that is what he did in prison. After being afraid initially, Lucie finally runs and hugs her father. The group takes him with them to live in London.

The messenger from Dover, Jerry, opens the next seem by beating his wife. He is sent to Old Bailey courthouse, where a case of treason is being held.


Darnay is arrested again the same day that he is freed. Three people have denounced him. Two are the Defarges and the third is Dr. Manette himself. The doctor cursed the Evermondes brothers who treated a peasant family cruelly. They peasants were where Madame Defarge’s family. The Evermonde brothers asked Dr. Manette to save the brother and sister but he was not able to do so. To protect themselves, the Evermondes had the doctor kidnapped and put in the Bastille. After hearing the document, Darnay is quickly sentenced to die the next day.

Next wee see a funeral procession for a spy named Roger Cly. Jerry the messenger has never seen the man before. That night Jerry’s son sees him digging ip the grave out of the ground and opening it. He runs away, and the next morning there is no food in Jerry’s house.

Lucie is a good wife and a good mother. She has a daughter and a son who dies at a young age. In 1789 her daughter, Lucie, is six years old. Lorry announces that the Paris branch of Tellson’s is in an uproar. The branch has an influx of business for protection because a mob has overtaken the Bastille prison in a killing rampage.

The violence in France last for three years. Lorry is called to France to help Tellson’s branch out. Darnay is sent to save a former servant of his uncle from prison, who sneaks away to France as well. He is caught and put in prison. Lucie and Dr. Manette go to Paris and the mob respects Dr. Manette for being a Bastille prisoner. After a year Darnay is acquitted from the charges and released.
