Plot analysis of Dead Man's Path

The short story “Dead Man’s Path” by Chinua Achebe is a story about tradition versus modern-day methods. Its message that tradition should not be ignored is especially influential to the present, where we find many traditional beliefs to be no more than fairy tales and forget to listen to the morals that are to be learned. Too bad the way the story moves very quickly from event to event without giving much detail causes the theme to be less meaningful. Even though the events are simply stated almost in an episodic fashion, it still follows the typical fictional plot pattern. It shows examples of all the elements of plot (exposition, complication, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution).

At the opening the reader is given the date and learns the name of the protagonist, main character. The exposition lacks by not giving too clear an impression of where in the world the story takes place; only through reading the short bibliography on the author before the story (325) can we make the assumption that it takes place somewhere in Nigeria.
