In a country as diverse as America the word ethnicity has many roles and meanings in society. Although these meanings are mostly given as people outside of the ethnic category described, they help give association to many groups that otherwise have little The categorization or association that the term ethnicity gives to the group is helpful in many ways in distinguishing them apart from us buy also in giving a kind of security within the different communities.
Lets take the example of common but misleading ethnic associations known as Hispanics. While it is true that many Hispanics share common traits which are used in marking ethnic categorization such as language, ancestry from Spain and other cultural factors it is also true that t
he differences if not greater than the similarities give no sense of commonalities within the group. I can take this concept further by taking my imposed categorization of Hispanics by Americans. Although it is true that there is a certain associations with my Spanish speaking brothers in the United states I see myself not only though expansive and culture as a totally different ethnic group. I see myself different because I am from Argentina and have more of the European traits than the Hispanic traits. Some of these traits may include my German as well as my Italian decent or the foods I eat as well as the way I look.
