Abortion
Throughout our life everyone will eventually have to make a huge decisions. For some, it could be to go away to college, for others, whether or not to take a new job out of state. What decision most people don’t have to make is probably one of the toughest decisions possible, whether or not to destroy a human life. In1973, in the landmark case of Roe vs. Wade, the United states supreme court ruled that the fourteenth amendment to the United States constitution provided a fundamental right for women to obtain abortions (“Abortion Overview”). Since 1973, there have been over 45 million abortions in the United States alone (“Abortion in the United States”) making abortion one of the most frequently performed operations in America (Roleff 16). Becky Smith, a school teacher in Virginia said, “The weekend before I started teaching me and my boyfriend broke up and he moved to the other side of the state. And just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I found out I was pregnant on my first day of school. The choice to make was clear. I have never once regretted my decision. For one of the first times in my life, I felt that I had taken control of my life and my circumstances, and felt
The final reason I could see have an abortion we have to be lack of finances. Some believe that abortion is a selfish choice but I strongly disagree. If a mother does not have the finances to take care of herself, why should she have the added pressure of raising another human? It would be more responsible to have a child at a later date. What if you’re a college student and you become pregnant, should you throw your whole future away just because of one mistake? “Abortion is a mother’s act. It is an act of sacrifice, love, power, and necessity... (Roleff 55). No one ever said that having an abortion was easy, and why make it harder on them by insulting them with signs on the way into any abortion clinic around the United States? I believe that everyone should be giving an equal chance to excel in this world. Why bring another child into this world that will not have the same opportunity as the next. Another problem we face is the number of young teens getting pregnant. Last year, 7317 girls called the ChildLine about pregnancy. Of those 7000 girls, 80% of them were between the ages of 12 and 16. “In the main, young people’s early sexual experiences do not seen to be planned or even explicitly chose, peer pressure, pressure from boyfriends, too much alcohol and sheer opportunity all played a part”, says Tessa Jowell, president of ChildLine (“Government Pledges to Cut Teen Pregnancies”). Especially in these times sex is everywhere around us. On MTV, women such as Brittney Spears and Christina Agulaira base their entire career on sex. “Sex Sells”, Brittney Spears said to one Miami Herald reporter, and so it does. Brittney Spears is one of the most proficient moneymakers in the world. Girls grow up wanting to be just like their favorite singer or actress. “If their having sex, why shouldn’t I?”, says a young girl at a Brittney Spears concert in Miami, Florida. With everything now in our society based on sex, how can we stop this youthful revolution from taking place and how can we stop young girls from getting pregnant. Finally, many pro-life activists believe that rape is not justification for abortion. They believe that it is wrong to kill a child for their father’s wrong doing. “It is wrong to discriminate against people who have been born because of the manner in which they came into the world, and it is also wrong to discriminate against pre-born people by attempting to justify abortion in cases where the mother has been raped (Alcorn 231-232). I believe that if the child was not wanted, why should the mother have to go through all the child bearing pain and endless amounts of doctor bills to have an unwanted child. Christina, a student at the University of Texas, was raped b
