Girl interuptted

Reading the book Girl, Interrupted was a far more enjoyable task than I expected. Susanna Kaysen’s gripping account of her short time spent in a mental institution in the late sixties was informative as well as interesting. Her use of poignant humor and factual tales made for an easy read. Any book that can keep my attention after the first page is one that I’ll definitely like. I think that a character as lovable as Susanna is one that most any young woman can identify with. We’ve all had the issues of a bad relationship, depression and possibly even attempted suicide. What makes this story great is that you know that she overcame all of this and went on to follow her dreams as a successful writer.

I can definitely relate myself to Susanna in a few ways. Like her, I tend to think way too much, which is actually the cause of most of my problems! Kaysen also analyzes people like I do. I always seem to be comparing myself to whomever I’m around, wondering what they are thinking, and if they are having any problems like I am. Sure, I’m never around a sociopath like Lisa, burn victims like Polly, compulsive liars or people with complex eating disorders, but I’m a daily people analyzer. Susanna is a free spirit an

Kaysen is a really strong woman who I think we all could learn from. The part that I liked the most about this book was the fact that you knew it was real, and she was right around my age when this was happening. I probably wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone who didn’t have at least a high school education, but I can definitely see why most college psychology classes have to read it. After reading girl interrupted, I’m most definitely curious to read another book by Kaysen. I would dare to say that I even learned a little from this book about myself, and life in general. Kaysen exemplifies that you are only as strong as what you can deal with, and in my opinion she’s one of the strongest women out there.

It’s really hard for me to say which one I liked better, because I read the book first so I feel almost biased. I think they are pretty much equally good, and it’s just a personal preference whether or not you are a book reader or a movie watcher. I just basically thought it was really interesting and amazing how she could overcome everything, and go on to tell about it later. One of my favorite parts of the whole book was when they described taking the girls out for ice cream. That showed that when it comes down to it, they are simply girls who need some guidance and love. I think mental institutions back then could have had a lot less patients
