Tale of kieu

The Tale of Kieu is a cleverly written poem. It boasts an abundant cast of fascinating characters, one of which is Kieu, incidentally the main character of the story. Morality is one of the main issues in the controversy surrounding the events of Kieu and her nature. It is commonplace that basic moral actions involve keeping promises, being upright in the face of opposition, and unselfishness in respect to being considerate of others. So is Kieu really a moral character, as many have argued? Or according to me and some others, is she just another girl who does “whatever’s clever” as long as she gets what she wants even if it affects others around her in a negative fashion? I say this because there is palpable and apparent evidence in the story that proves Kieu is not as innocent a character as many hold her to be.

It is undeniable that Kieu’s act was a moral one when she refused Kim’s lustful advances when they first hit it off. Since they both were not married yet, keeping her chastity till marriage was only a moral thing to do. Kim and Kieu both made lifelong vows to each other: Kim professes his love to Kieu and says, “Let’s pledge our troth with something.” (line 341) Kieu then replies, “I’ll etch you

Even though Kieu may have tried to be virtuous towards the beginning of the story, she gives up easy and exposes her true nature as the story unfolds. She sneaks around with Kim without the knowledge of her parents, breaks her promise to Kim, and consummates with several lovers which also to their downfall. She does this all while thinking only for herself and what she wanted with the knowledge that her fate was cursed. There is nothing more revolting and despicable than that. Kieu’s lifestyle is a perfect example of what a woman’s should not be. Therefore a good thing to keep in mind is when one is reading The Tale of Kieu, one is actually reading about actions Kieu commits- actions which should be avoided when trying to keep a moral set of standards. Despite all of Kieu’s education and wealthy upbringing, she was not able to maintain her virtue, inciting the question: Why bathe a pig when you know it’s just going to wallow in the mud again?

r word, our troth, in stone and bronze.” (line 352) Little did Kim know that Kieu would go back on those vows a bit later in life as she bends to circumstances instead of upholding her vows. She once promised Kim: “While I’m alive, you’ll sometime get your due.” (line 522) Fifteen years later, she tells him that she cannot give him his “due”. She states, “What little chastity I may have saved, am I to fling it under trampling feet?” (lines 3161-3162) She provides pathetic excuses for not fulfilling her vows to Kim. Kieu is no longer a virgin, therefore she has no chastity. Even if she did, she would not be giving any of it away by sharing a bed with Kim, because after all, wasn’t he her first/true love, and didn’t she once make vows to him that she was supposed to keep? Kieu and Kim are married now, so it would not be immoral for them to share a bed. She does not have any good excuses for not keeping her vows to him. Evidently, she just wants to keep whatever “chastity” she may have saved for herself. Again, Kieu’s immorality is shown here in her selfishness.
