Death as a Result of Pride
Truth is only in the eye of the beholder, and one can only see the truth if pride is not obscuring their view. The drama play, Death of a Salesman, was written by Arthur Miller in 1949, and takes place in New York. The main characters include Willy Loman, his wife Linda Loman, and his sons Biff and Happy Loman. Many of the scenes occur in the Loman house, yard, and various places Willy Loman visits in the New York and Boston area. Willy Loman, a traveling salesman, represents the hardworking men of Middle America trying to deal with family and financial burdens while trying to put food on the table for his family. Willy’s older son Biff has just arrived home after quitting his job working on a farm in the South. Willy Loman’s was unable to see the permanent damage his pride caused not only himself but his family and others. This unfaltering pride eventually leads to his demise. Willy Loman’s pride is the basis for his inability to take into consideration others opinions and advice toward his family and his life. Willy pushes his friends and families opinions away in an attempt to keep himself above all others. This point is evident in the beginning of the play when Linda speaks to Willy about people having to move somew
Yet Willy’s pride hinders his judgment even when he is in need of help. Charley, Willy’s neighbor, offered Willy a job working for him many times and every time Willy says that he has a job already. Charley has given Willy money to pay the bills ever since believe that there are more people, and when she tries to continue her argument she is cut off by Willy. After cutting Linda off, Willy states, “There’s more people!”(Miller, 1182). Willy made sure that he had the last word in the argument to rectify that he does not care for his wife’s opinion on any matter. Willy cutting his wife off only shows how he does not think she could have any knowledge on a matter because she is a woman. Naturally, he will regard others in the same way trying to keep them inferior to him. Willy has pride in his family and himself, but does not want anyone to see they are human and make mistakes.
