Teen Pregnancy

A social problem is a condition that most people in society view as being undesirable. A public policy is a possible solution to all social problems. The first step would be to define the problem, identify causes, evaluate a policy, develop solutions, select a best solution, benefits & costs, the prince system and political strategies. Unfortunately not all public policies pass and some social problems remain to exist. One being teenage pregnancy and, this is one social problem that will probably never be eliminated 100%. The movie, Fifteen and Pregnant that aired on Lifetime focused on this issue.

Fifteen and Pregnant was about a fifteen year old girl who lived in a small town with her mother, brother and sister. Her parents were divorced, but her and her siblings still spent time with their father. The mother was financially stable enough to care for her and her children’s basic needs and not enough for extra added luxuries and what not. Just enough to get the family by, they were far from wealthy and just barely considered middle class. The girl became involved with a guy in her school who was seventeen, slightly older than her. Between all the confusion with her family issues she was feeling alone and out of pla

“Each year almost 1 million teenage women-10% of all women aged 15-19 and 19% of those who have sexual intercourse become pregnant, accounting for 13% of all U.S births. 78% of teen pregnancies are unplanned and the outcomes are miscarriage 14%, birth 56% and abortion 30%. Teen pregnancy rates are much higher in the United States than in many other developed countries. 83% of teens who give birth are much more likely to come from poor or low-income families. Seven in ten teen mothers complete high school, but they are less likely than women who delay having a child to go on to college. 1/3 of pregnant teens receive inadequate prenatal care; babies born to young mothers are more likely to have low-birth weight, childhood health problems and hospitalization.” The above are statistics taken from the following site: www.agiusa.org/pubs/fb_teen_sex.html - Research conducted by the Alan Guttmacher Institute

Some possible solutions to this social problem that exist or have been encouraged are, strong parent/teen communication, parental perceptions of teen’s sexual behavior, proper contraceptive use, teen oriented activities, identifying and turning away from peer pressure, sex education and agencies (i.e. Planned Parenthood). This particular social problem is one that will probably never be 100% eliminated for the simple fact that pregnancies occur from teens having sex. And teens are going to have sex regardless of how many laws are created, or rules and limitations parents set, and information they are given. There is no way to make every teen out there stop having sex, its virtually impossible but the number of teens having sex can be decreased as well as the number of pregnancies.

ce and this guy made her feel like she belonged. The couple was involved for a brief time before he suggested the idea of becoming sexually active. She was a little un-sure at first but he used some of the basic typical guy lines, “oh I love you so much and I just want to show you how much you mean to me,” “if you loved me you would give me you’re virginity.” So she agreed and, after the first time, she became pregnant. They didn’t use any form of protection which was probably a strong reason for the pregnancy. She anxiously a waited for her period but it never came. She took a pregnancy test and when the pregnancy test came out positive, she kept it a secret and explored her possible options. She was raised to be against abortions and so she couldn’t bring herself to do that. The first and only person she told for a while was her “boyfriend.” At first he was okay with it and said he would help and be there for her, so she began to feel good and secure about it. Not too lon
