Selecting Carpet for the home
Selecting Carpet for Comfort and Wear-Resistance in a New Home Many people don’t place enough emphasis on looking at carpet properties when selecting the new carpet for their home. There are certain factors in the construction of carpet that are very important to know. Buyers should read the carpet specifications, and become familiar with the different properties of carpets, to make a wise decision in the selection. If there is federal money involved in the financing of your new home; consequently, the carpet will have to meet two “Federal Specifications.” The two specifications are “Flammability Rating”, and “Pile Density Rating.” The carpet you choose for your new home has to meet these specifications for bank financing approval. Otherwise, you will have hardwood floors, and very little comfort under the feet. After settling these requirements the choices to consider next, are style, clean-ability, and wear-resistance. The most common carpet styles on the market today are the loop-pile, and cut-loop pile. The pile of the carpet is the fiber make-up of the carpets surface. Whether loop-pile or cut-loop pile is selected for the new home they both provide more comfort than wood or tile flooring. The cut-loop
pile carpet is softer than the loop-pile style. Simply explained, the carpet is made with a twisted yarn, usually nylon, and is looped up through the rigid carpet backing and back down again like a sewing thread through fabric. If the carpet is cut-loop pile type, the loop is cut and the yarn untwists, and becomes frayed and soft. However, if it is not cut at the top of the loop it will remain stiff, as is characteristic of continuous looped (loop-pile) style. The thickness of the pad can be increased under the cut-pile carpet up to 7/8”, thus enhancing the comfort level on the feet; however, increasing the pad thickness under the loop-pile style will not increase the comfort level after it reaches a thickness of 1/2 inch. This style is inherently stiff and rigid across the surface, for the reasons discussed above. On the other hand, the rigidity is relaxed when the loops where split on the cut-pile carpet and naturally makes it give more under the feet. These differing characteristics pose differing strategies in cleaning the two styles of carpets. Unlike the loop-pile carpet, the cut-loop pile carpet does not resist soil as well. The loop-pile style carpet has a tighter weave structure and soil stays near the top, but the cut-loop pile has been loosened by splitting the loop at the top of the carpet pile and lets soil settle further down into the pile.
