Explore the character of Pip in Great Expections

Pip’s home situation is quite tough from the point of view of a modern day person as his sister, Mrs. Joe Gargery, was very strict and physical if he did not do exactly what he was told. But one hundred and fifty years ago in Dickens’ time that would have been perfectly normal and no child could really expect any better. Pip’s brother in law Joe Gargery also had to put up with his sister’s rough attitude and strictness so Pip and Joe came to form a sort of alliance over time and soon became very good friends. So Pip feels he has a reasonable life and never questions it. He is grateful for the fact that his sister has brought him up “by hand” herself as his parents are dead. When at his family grave he encounters a violent convict (Magwitch) Pip feels very frightened as the convict threatens to cut his throat and tells him that he has another far more violent convict with him and that no boy is safe from him. Naturally Pip takes the food and file from his home and his honesty is proven by the immense guilt he feels after taking the food and file.

When Uncle Pumblechook arranges for Pip to go to Miss. Havisham’s house Pip does not realise what a devastating effect it will have on him and how his attitude to life wil

Below are additional random excerpts from the paper...

Pip has started to notice how his expectations have changed him and the negative effects they sometimes have on people “Their influence on my own character, I disguised from my recognition as much as possible, but I knew very well that it was not all good” this shows us that as Pip matures he realises things and sees effects that perhaps he could not see before. When the news of Mrs. Joe’s death gets to Pip he starts to feel the beginnings of guilt for his behaviour towards Joe and Biddy “I lived in a state of chronic uneasiness respecting my behaviour to Joe” this suggest that Pip has been so blind it takes someone’s death to jolt him into awareness. He also wonders whether he would have been better off never having embarked upon his expectations and remained at the forge. After the funeral his feelings of reproach towards Biddy: “Oh dear me! This really is a very bad side of human nature! Don’t say any more, if you please, Biddy. This shocks me very much.” Showing that he is not only very easily irritated but perhaps he goes a bit too far and is a bit too harsh.

Pip now acts as if he is superior to all that he has grown up with and even lived with and he does not want a “coarse and common” fuss made of his departure. But really he is very nervous of his departure and yet he still tells Joe that he does not want him to take him to the place where the coach will collect him and that he must do that by himself. His attitude to his departure is proven in that he tries to tell himself that it is not a big thing and he only offers a solemn goodbye to his family when he leaves showing that he wishes not for a fuss to be made.

Pip’s extreme dissatisfaction with what he has realised makes him resent Magwitch even more “I could not bring myself to bear the sight of him” and that also shows another reason being that he sacrificed Joe, his good old friend, for this criminal scum as he sees him. “All his actions were uncouth, noisy and greedy” showing that he despises every aspect of the convict and “he looked like a hungry old dog” using unpleasant imagery showing that Pip from his current state of mind will only ever see bad things in Magwitch. Pip wants him out of his sight “In a frenzy of fear and dislike…I want to know how you are going to be kept out of danger, how long are you going to stay?” proving that Pip is ashamed to look at him. Also Pip notices, maybe being a little paranoid, that Magwitch treats him as if he owns him “Once again, he took me by both hands and surveyed me with an air of admiring proprietorship” showing that maybe Pip feels Magwitch is po
