Heirlooms

Throughout history, society is constantly changing. Within societies, cultures will also begin to change. These differences are mainly visible among the generations within a culture. Alice Walkers “Everyday Use” is a story that shows how these changes affect a family living in two different worlds. It is about a mom and her daughter Maggie’s experience with another daughter who has moved away and come to visit. The mom and Maggie live in a small, rural house and have a simple lifestyle. The other daughter, Dee, has gone off to college and experienced society’s changes firsthand. The meeting is awkward between them because of the confusion these changes have caused. Dee has become something that she understands as right and mother and Maggie are the way they are because they see their lives as right. Changes in society cause cultural confusion among the generations.

Another result of cultural changes is the distance between generations. As time goes by and things change, peoples lives must also change. When one generation moves forward with society they may have less in common with past generations. As self-image and viewpoints change, relationships between the generations may dwindle. As Dee’s opinions about her heritage were reformed, she believed she less in common with her mom and sister. Even though it was her heritage that she strived to retain, she pushed her contemporary heritage away. She could not understand why her mom and sister lived in the old-fashioned way, but she took pictures of them and their small house on a farm.

The consequences of a changing society affects people differently among cultures. We must learn to be able to change and still embrace past generations. Change should be a positive experience for someone individually. As we change we should understand and except past actions with the same respect we give to our cultures’ history. Also, as things to begin to change in our generation, we must keep an open mind.
