Innovative Thinking or Delayed Actions: How North America wa

Canada, America and Mexico were all positively influenced by the liberal ideas of democracy, equality and free markets in the 20th century. The pursuit for democracy and a democratic way of thinking in general took over all three nations by the 1920. The enfranchisement of women in Canada, America and Mexico had occurred by 1955 after years of struggling by women suffragists. All three North American nations felt the impact of free markets, either as investors, or as the host to foreign owned businesses in pursuit of a profit. Indeed, each nation felt a positive influence from the effects of these three liberal ideas in the 20th century.

Democracy has reached far beyond the political arena in both the United States and Canada. Democratic influence has allowed for the enfranchisement of women, African Americans and Native North Americans, as well as acting as the driving force behind the civil and equal rights movements of the 1950’s and 60’s in America. In Canada native and cultural rights have been fought for and preserved through the influence of democracy. In Mexico, the desire for a democratic republic is what initiated the Mexican revolution. Although a true democratic political system was not in place until much

Foreign investment well suited the conservative Canadians who gladly allowed the American investors to take business risks (Bumsted, 228). Southern Ontario was the most desirable location for branch plants of American ownership mainly because of its proximity to the “industrial heartland” of America and the great lakes. At the time, provincial legislation allowed that raw materials taken from Ontario could only be processed in Canada. This prevented the opportunity for Americans to attain the raw goods in Canada and then transport them south of the border to refineries in America, forcing the opening of mills in Canada at the expense of the needy Americans (Bumsted, 229). The economic pursuits of the three nations during the early 20th century has forged how each country acts today in the global market. Canada and Mexico are still complacent compared to the Americans who are still looking for economic opportunities beyond its borders.

The influence of free market economies had a comparable effect on the nations of Canada and Mexico for the majority of the 20th century. Each nation was host to a considerable amount of foreign investment, specifically, oil and manufacturing. The United States took more of an imperialist role in how they took advantage of free markets to seek business opportunities in other nations. Specifically, the United States and Britain played a major role in the developing economies of Canada and Mexico. American interests in Mexico were lead by Edward L. Doheny who purchased over 600000 acres of land deemed as potentially rich in oil around Tampico and Tuxpan Mexico (Meyer, 434). Britain also had slightly more than a passing interest in Mexico as an opportunity for investment. Areas around Veracruz, San Luis Potosi, Tamaulipas, and Tabasco were awarded to British entrepreneur Sir Weetman Dickinson Pearson for the purposes of oil drilling. Through these men, both Britain and America helped make Mexico one of the largest petroleum producers
