Children and society.
I believe everybody would agree that being a child is quite a challenge. I mean, a little human entering a huge and, frankly speaking, very unfriendly world must learn a lot to succeed in his or her life. The most important, I would say, vital information they must get is about the society, they are about to enter. Adults, who have greater experience and knowledge of life, are always near and eager to help: parents, friends and relatives, school and college teachers, as well as book writers. In two short stories “A Mother’s Tale” by James Agee and “The Lesson” by Toni Cade Bambara authors impart with readers their own special meanings about life and society. No two leaves in the world are exactly the same, so are human beings. Therefore, beliefs of people depend on individuals. In terms of the best way of learning about life, some people may turn to the advice of Agee and Bambara, while others might prefer to acquire the meaning of life through their own private experience. No one have right to judge the beliefs and morals of other people, so it will be better first to examine what lessons do each author tries to convey, and then on the base of their massages I will draw my conclusion of my way of foundations about life
The second thing I would definitely teach the younger generation is dignity. “Each one is himself,” said Agee in his story and I believe these words are the most important in his whole essay. I believe that the idea of the individuality and uniqueness of each and every person in the world should be put in people’s mind since early childhood. It would unquestionably help children to built a strong base for their future life and to avoid such things as betraying “themselves and their kind and their children” and of course being betrayed. From the story “A Mother’s Tale” I’ve learned that an old cow, representing an old and respectful personage, tells her siblings a story about the one who had miraculously escaped the death and returned to his motherland to open the eyes of naïve herds on their meaning of life. I believe, that the words about freedom, independence and rebellion, he tried to convey to his brothers and sisters, are the most important in the whole story, but his words are quite opposite to the words of the mother about calm and steady life. Frankly speaking, this whole essay is predetermined by the racial diversity of people that live in the United States. “Then we check out that we on the Fifth Avenue and everybody dressed up in stockings. One lady in a fur coat, hot as it is. White folks are crazy,” says the author, implying that all white population of the United States is completely different from black people. The only thing I don’t understand is how somebody can teach anybody to fight for an “equal chance to pursue happiness” and still divide people on “them” and “us.” Instead of this why don’t we try to learn ourselves, and especially children, as they don’t have any prejudices, that in fact “all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” if they want it; and that is what Toni and her friends did not understood. It is quite funny why the author named her essay “The Lesson”. I don’t think that neither Miss Moore, nor the passage it self do not teach anything. “Imagine for a minute what kind of society it is in which some people can spend on a toy what it would cost to feed a family of six or seven,” says one
