Sexuality and death go hand in hand when a horror movie is made. This is because they are looked upon much the same by the general public. Almost all horror movies big or small have a portion of sexual related scenes or symbolism. The presence of sex in horror films can be traced as far back as Nosferatu. In Nosferatu the only way to kill Count Orlock was to have him distracted till dawn by a pure virgin that surrendered herself to his thirst. Orlock also showed some sort of psychological power to manipulate women. Sex has been present in horror films ever since.
Humans seem to have two sides to them: One side being the socially acceptable actions and thoughts, and another side that suppresses unacceptable fantasies or feelings. I believe that your instincts are part of your “other side.” Humans are animals, and we do have instincts such as mating and killing. Sex and death are instincts that are constrained by society and denied to humans because they are wrong.
Sex is in horror movies not just because they are alike, but because it also shows symbolism. Nudity symbolizes vulnerability. A common part of a horror movie is the beautiful woman running for her life. Women are also seen as being more vulnerable. Although women are not the only victims in horror films, they tend to out number the men. Psycho was the first movie to have the “woman in jeopardy” theme. Many movies including Psycho involve murders after the act of sex. Several reviews have said that the murderer killed the victims because they were tainted or even sinners. The murderer punished these victims for their sin. Horror films contain many metaphors and symbolism. Horror films have women victims and sex scenes for a reason. Not only because that’s what we want to see, but also because the director can use sex to symbolize other ideas. Sex is very easy to use as symbolism, because it is still so mysterious, and we are still so curious about it.
