Do you realize that we are so lucky to be living on such a beautiful island? An island where the sun shines on golden sands warm seas, and evergreen hills? An island serene and peaceful but not so remote from humanity, say, with all the facilities of a city within comfortable reach. You do? Without knowing it, you have been enjoying yourself staying in Penang. What is your opinion Sue Lin?

For those who know however, it has been labelled with a variety of complimentary phrases but the one which has stuck, and is known throughout the Far East is “The Pearl of the Orient.” It is situated 2 miles off the North West coast of Peninsular of Malaysia. In the centre of the island is the highest hill known as the Western Hill and is about 838 meters high. The Hill is residential and being served by a funicular railway and is highly recommended as a place for those who wish to escape from the heat and also for its magnificent views over the island and the mainland. The fact that Penang is the home of many different racial groups, give rise to both eating and things to be seen from the everyday way of life to the special festivals of different races. Certainly, the Weld Quay or Penang’s waterfront which attracts the tourist, is its interesting example of the riverine type of settlement with a whole village of wooden houses built out over the sea on stilts and the livelihood of the people. Also the Fort Cornwallis where Captain Francis Light, the founder of Penang, first landed. Goddess of Mercy Temple, in Pitt Street, is a modest little structure but at the same time is extremely popular and is probably the busiest temple in Penang. The Kapitan Kling Mosque at Pitt Street is believed to be the first mosque built about 1800 by a wealthy Mohamedan Kling. Just beyond the end of Pitt Street in Cannon Square is the Khoo Kongsi Building which looks after the welfare and interests of the clansmen and also endeavours to safeguard the principles of family worship. Penang Museum and Art Gallery, Kek Lok Si, a beautiful temple built since 1890 on the side of the hill. Penang Botanical Garden or commonly called Waterfall Garden, Esplanade, Gurney Drives, Snake Temple, Penang Hill are some of the popular tourist attractions.
