Black boy paper
"I began to marvel at how smoothly the black boys acted out the roles that the white race had mapped out for them. Most of them were not conscious of living a special, separate, stunted way of life"(197). Throughout the novel, Richard deals with a lot of hard issues growing up in a separate world that was much different from white people. In the 1920’s where there are many racial obstacles, Richard overcomes the prejudice and maintains his dignity and pride. The first example of how Richard overcomes the prejudice and maintains his dignity and pride is when a white woman tells Richard he has no chance at becoming a writer. “The woman had assaulted my ego; she had assumed that she knew my place in life, what I felt, what I ought to be, and I resented her with all my heart”(147). Richard’s hopes and dreams are to become a writer at such a time when many blacks weren’t able to maintain good jobs. Richard knew that the woman had crushed his hopes and dreams. He also knew that maybe he wouldn’t become a writer, but he definitely didn’t want a white woman to tell him this. Richard then decides he will never go back to work for the woman. In today’s world, many people would speak up for their rights and tell the person
what they felt. But, in the 1920’s, there were many racial obstacles such as getting in a fight with white people or even death. Which left Richard to think very carefully before he said anything unacceptable to a white person. However, Richard manages to overcome the racial obstacles he faces and maintains his dignity and pride by continuing to not give up on his dreams. In conclusion, Richard overcomes the prejudice and maintains his dignity and pride at a time in the 1920’s when there were many racial obstacles. Richard portrays his dignity and pride throughout the book with numerous examples. The first example showed how much dignity and prepared for him. Richard’s determination makes him shrug off the fact that he will not be able to graduate and starts to walk out. At this point, the principal thinks Richard is working for white people and begins to feel afraid. But Richard just laughs with a no and walks right out. This specific example shows how much self worth Richard possesses. Richard’s dignity and pride are maintained once again in a time where prejudicial issues are around. Richard displays dignity and pride while maintaining many racial obstacles once again when he refuses a dollar to buy food from a white man who knew deep down that Richard was starving. “ Whenever I saw him I felt
