Right in the beginning of Gregor’s new life as a bug, he is trapped in that he finds he is changing physically, one such example is that he can no longer communicate properly with his family. However, this simply results in his escape from his obligation to his family, which they obviously took for granted all along during Gregor’s working period. Gregor is freed from society and family expectations, while his family becomes entrapped to him. He no longer has to work as he is not capable of doing so, and as a result, the members of his family all seek jobs. Gregor gets out from under his father’s control when Gregor can no longer work, as now his father has to take action and find a job to provide for his family. Physically Gregor is freed as well as he adjusts to his changing body.

Leads directly into how he lets himself be used by not believing in himself and trusting himself.

s, Gregor is a grown human capable of making his own decisions and taking necessary actions, yet he never once “takes action”, showing lack of confidence in himself and in his decision making skills. Gregor had to work full-time as the sole provider for his family, and in thinking about it, he says to himself, “it will probably take another five or six years [to get] the money together to pay off my parents’ debt to him (the boss)” (4). Gregor is given complete responsibility to care for his family [and get them out of debt], and as a result, his family becomes entirely dependent on him for money [and a sense of security]. Due to Gregor’s continued care for his family, they quickly grew accustomed to the incoming money, and were no longer fazed by Gregor’s accomplishments, “although later on Gregor earned enough money to meet the expenses of the entire family and actually did so. They (his family) had just gotten used to it” (27). His family took Gregor, and all the work he put in to support them, for granted; in the beginning they showed delight in Gregor’s efforts, yet as time progressed, Gregor did not so much as receive a “thank you” for his work, even though he was now working harder and making more money. The family also takes advantage of Gregor and his trust and devotion to them. Every month, Gregor brought home almost his entire salary for the purpose of repaying his father’s debt, yet, without Gregor’s knowledge, it “had never been completely used up and had accumulated into a tidy principal… [Gregor] actually could have paid off more of his father’s debt to the boss with this extra money, and the day on which he could have gotten rid of his job would have been much closer, but now things were undoubtedly better the way his father had arranged them” (28).
