The killing of Luyen Phan Nguyen

While attending a party a young Vietnamese American Luyen Phan Nguyen was beaten into unconsciousness at a party in Coral Springs, Florida. These beatings directly resulted in Luyens’ spine being broken and severe trauma to the brain. Luyen eventually lost his life as a direct result of the beatings. Was the attack a result of a party getting out of control, or was it a clash of cultures, or did racism have a major play in the events on that Saturday night? To this day, we still do not have the answer to those hypotheses.

Luyen was an immigrant from Vietnam. After the Vietnam War, the North Vietnamese Army took his father Dat Nguyen into custody. Dat eventually escaped and immigrated with his family to the United States. Dat was a doctor in Vietnam and eventually received approval to practice in the United States. Luyen was very young when his family arrived in the United States. Luyen quickly assimilated into his new country. He learned the language quickly and spoke with no accent. Luyen was a model student and received straight A’s throughout school. He was very active in track and field and enjoyed throwing the shot putt. Luyen was a perceived as a foreigner because he did not look like they did. The young men ages ranged between eighteen to twenty-two years old. Several of the young men had minor criminal records. Some of the young men had even served time in prison. They had already established a track record of getting drunk and picking fights at parties with who ever they disliked. They were inconsiderate of others beliefs, opinions and had a strong dislike for foreigners. They were all high school dropouts. The young men had no desire to better themselves in pursuit of the American Dream. To them the American Dream was something that they felt was their birthright. The young men and Luyen were destined to clash with each other at the party that night. When they saw Luyen, they were immediately jealous. They felt he was stealing their piece of the American Dream.

The young men considered anyone that did not look like them to be a foreigner. Luyen being of Vietnamese decent definitely did not look like. They were all White Anglo Saxon and Luyen easily fit into their category of foreigner. Another major difference between them was that Luyen was well educated and actively pursuing his doctorate and the young men were uneducated high school dropouts. Luyen came to the party well dressed and definitely stood out from the crowd. There was an immediate jealously betw
