Most importantly, it is the duty of a parent to make sure that their teenager is heading in the right direction in their life. If the teenager won’t communicate, the parent must check up on him. When teenagers aren’t pushed to do their best or be on their best behaviour, they have a tendency to be influenced by their peers and may cause them to follow the wrong path in life. My friend, Amanda, is a perfect example of this issue. We used to be close friends when we were younger and we were both “good girls” in our parents’ eyes. When her parents divorced, she changed school and we grew apart. I saw her recently at a friend’s birthday party and realized that she was a drug-attic. I spoke to her briefly about her substance abuse problem. She told me that when her parents divorced, “it all went downhill from there.” As a result of her parents’ neglection to invade on her privacy, Amanda kept her feelings about the divorce bottled up and thus, used drugs as a means of dealing with her problems. She turned to substance abuse, when it should have been a parent. Her life is now ruined because she didn’t have a parent to ask her what was wrong, or to be aware of her whereabouts every Saturday night. Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” also deals with the issue of the invasion of privacy. At the beginning of the play, Prince Hamlet encounters his late father’s spirit. Hamlet’s father tells him that his brother, Claudius (the new king of Denmark), assassinated him. Only one month after his father was murdered, Gertrude (Hamlet’s mother) married his Uncle Claudius, leaving Hamlet feeling betrayed and depressed. In an effort to deal with his tragic turn of events, Hamlet keeps his feelings bottled up. After learning that his mother remarried with “most wicked speed”(p.31: 161), Hamlet curses the law against “self-slaughter”(p.29: 136) and “all the uses of this world” (p.29: 138) seem to have no meaning.
