Scarlet letter scaffold analysis

The Scarlet Letter is portrayed with profound symbolism and revolves around the idea that hidden guilt causes more suffering than open guilt. This theme along with its symbolism is demonstrated through the lives of the three main characters - Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth throughout the story. Their personalities are shown most clearly during the scaffold scenes. These scenes are the most substantial situations in the story because they illustrate the immediate, delayed, and prolonged effects that the sin of adultery has on the main characters. From careful analysis of the first two scenes, one can predict what will be the approximate outcome of the third.

It’s apparent that the first scaffold happening was early on in the book, one of the very first scenes. In the first scene, everyone in the town is gathered in the market place because Hester is being questioned about the identity of the father of her child Pearl. Hester experiences open guilt through being publicly punished for adultery. She is being forced to stand on the scaffold for three hours straight to be ridiculed and ostracized by the community. While Hester tries to make the best out of her situation, Dimmesda

Character locations will be different as well. Of course Dimmesdale, Hester and Pearl will be on the scaffold but since Chillingworth’s position gradually moves ever closer; he will be closer than ever now. Possibly half way up the stairs or even right on too; it seems evident that he wouldn’t want Dimmesdale to mount the scaffold because then he has no more power over him.

le becomes weaker by letting guilt and grief eat away at his conscience, reducing him to a shriveling, pathetic creature.

Nathaniel Hawthorne said it quite cleverly in one of his other books (The House of Seven Gables--The Flight of Two Owls) when he stated, “What we call real estate--the solid ground to build a house on--is the broad foundation on which nearly all the guilt of this world rests. Every guilty person is his own hangman and he who flees from trial confesses his guilt.” This is the exact case as with his novel of his that is being read right now. When it comes to guilt, man is his own worst enemy; one thing is for sure, all have felt it. Human consciences won’t let the mind go on regularly throughout life with something terrible, and it’s even detrimental to one’s health until cleansed, repented, and forgotten. The only way to make amends for sinful behavior is to let it be known and face it like a man, the only way.

Later on in the novel, in the second scene, is Dimmesdale’s scaffold appearance. He is standing on top of the scaffold alone in the middle of the night. He sees Hester and Pearl walk through the market place on their way back from Governor Winthrop's bedside. When Dimmesdale recognizes them and tells them to join him, they walk up the steps to stand by his side. Chillingwort
