Reflections on psychological processes

Early on this semester, we were introduced to certain principles of psychology in order for us to have a better grasp of the subject matter. These principles are supposedly what matters to psychology and life. At first, I wasn’t really convinced that these principles were so relevant to life itself though its significance to psychology was pretty clear to me. Perhaps this was due to my failure to acquire a book right away, or maybe I just didn’t or couldn’t see its relevance to my life. Now, I realize that it was a little of both. As I carefully read through the pages of my newly borrowed book, going over each paragraph on these principles, images of myself, my childhood, and other memories and experiences came about. It was fun recalling those images, and at the same time enlightening.

They say that basically, your biological make-up or composition greatly determines your behavior. Though I believe that I do not have any brain abnormalities or complexities like the ones stated in the book, the basic point that your features affect your behavior, brings about many things for me. One of the things that almost instantly popped out of my mind was my poor eyesight. Because of certain limitations in my vision, I have

My hesitance to accept science as a part of almost everything could perhaps be rooted to my culture as a person. I say “my culture” because I believe that within our culture of being Filipino lies many “sub-cultures” that vary among individuals. These variations can come from countless factors, ranging from religion to geographical location. More so, I also believe that each person adds a certain “twist” to whatever “culture” he or she is readily exposed to, creating something more defined or more appropriate to that specific person. I, for example, grew up in a family that has a very deep appreciation and patriotism for art. Now, combine this with my catholic upbringing and I end up with a very alternative, emotional and abstract way of seeing life. On the other hand, society continues to change, and as it does, I gain a better understanding for what I believe in and stand for through my experiences. The culture I grew up in remains solid within me and I learn more as an individual as I live my life. This is also in line with individual variations. Though people may belong to the same country or the same religious group, each individual is unique and different from another. I recall an incident when I was around five years of age when I met this kid of my mom’s friend. We lived in the same area and went to the same church but this kid was really one of the first mean people that I have ever met. I asked my mom why he was like that and not like my other friends and she just told me that “everybody’s different, anak…some in a good way, some in a bad way…”

We shape each other’s minds and lives through our interactions as humans. Everyone makes everyone else’s lives worthwhile. The same way as controversy inspires development and the way science improves and feeds from it. Without controversy and disagreement, there would be no drive for improvement. Just as this paper would b
