By the dawn of the 16th century, religious conflict, overpopulation, uneven distribution of wealth, and economic depression greatly perturbed Protestant England. As a result, the pursuit for religious freedom, affluence, and adventure incited the people to take action and establish colonies in North America as a land of opportunity. These New World colonies were mostly independent, unaware of the fact that all of them were to coexist and develop closely intertwined relations amongst one another by the 18th century. A single, American society was thus to develop, set apart from the problems and tribulations in England. By 1775, there were over 32 English colonies in North America. Comprising these colonies, American society was slightly different in each area in its own way, but all colonies coalesced to form one single, unified region. By the outbreak of the Revolution, the New England, Middle and Southern Colonies forged into a single, independent American society through shared origins, ways of life, and tenets of religious/social tolerance, economic development and self-rule. The ways of life in the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies shared common similarities, despite their differences, to erect a single America. Life in American greatly differed from the life in England, as Americans ate more abundantly of meat than people in England. Life was generally tough in the mid 18th century for the people in the colonies as there were no water in households, no plumbing, no heating in Churches and primitive ways of disposing garbage. Entertainment-wise, in the English customs, amusement was encouraged when time permitted in most colonies. Such examples include social gatherings, drinking, flirting and merrymaking. Lotteries were unanimously accepted, because they helped raise money for churches and colleges, which education was seen as a necessity in the New England colonies. In the south, farm labor replaced education generally. Thus, education was wide spread in the North and English doctrines (religious) were taught, tying the beliefs and teachings of the American society as one. The North and South were also closely unified within through their distinct preferred lifestyle. In the North, winter sports were enjoyed, while in the South, horse racing, card playing, fox hunting, cockfighting, and stage plays were popular.
