This past year the University of California decided to not use the SAT I exam and take a broader approach to admitting students into college. Richard C. Atkinson, president of the university of California, was the person that decided the SAT I exam needed to go. He said “the SAT I sends a confusing message to students, teachers and schools.”(Gehring 1) It is also known that students who take the SAT I exam “will be tested on material that is unrelated to what they study in their classes. The grades they can achieve can be devalued by a test that is not part of their school curriculum.”(Gehring 2) The University of California is now looking more closely at high school grades, qualities of leadership, and motivational skills. The University of California may also start using the SAT II exam to decide whether a student is academically prepared for college.

This past year the SAT I exam has been revamped. “The new SAT is intended to measure academic preparedness.” (Barnes 52) The test is not going to have any quantitative comparisons anymore. “But by 2005 the board plans to strip out the analogies section, ask questions based on more advanced math, and add a grammar and essay writing test.” (Barnes 52) This may help the problem but is not a total solution.
